Athlon II X4 630 Computer Build

As promised, here are the build pics from my new PC.

  • AMD Athlon II X4 630 CPU (2.8 GHz Quad-Core)
  • OCZ Gold 2x4GB RAM
  • GIGABYTE GA-MA785Gt-UD3H Motherboard (AM3)
  • Antec Three Hundred Case
  • Enermax Liberty Modular 500w PSU
  • Windows 7 Professional
  • Samsung SyncMaster P2350 23″ LCD Monitor
  • Logitech Wireless Desktop K700 Keyboard / Mouse

I’m a big fan. It’s damn quick. It is also incredibly silent. I can hear my WHS box in a closet about 8 feet away over the sound of this rig which is about 2 feet away from my head.

UPDATE: I’ve run into my first real issue with this rig – for some reason the display refuses to wake from sleep. The whole thing will appear to sleep fine, but then when I try to wake it the display will not wake up; the hard drive spins up, fans turn on, etc. The only way for me to get back is to pull the power plug for 10 – 15 seconds and then restart the computer.

I have tried numerous BIOS settings (S1 / S3 sleep, USB wake features, etc), new drivers within Windows (video / motherboard), changing settings in Windows (disable hybrid sleep), but nothing seems to cure this problem. I have a hunch it’s related to the motherboard / BIOS, in particular related to USB. I’m running a “beta” BIOS right now, so I hope that when the final is released this issue will be resolved.

Build looks good!

It’s gotta be a driver issue… do you have monitor driver installed or is it just generic? sometimes that does stuff…

ScottFebruary 28th, 2010 at 9:51 pm

hmm… interesting thought. It’s recognized, but it’s the generic Windows 7 driver. I have the ATI drivers for my chipset / video, but I’ll try the monitor driver from Samsung.

EDIT: no dice. There is no video going to the monitor at all when it tries to resume from sleep. Also, my wireless, USB keyboard turns on when I press a key on it, but then turns right off. I think it’s a USB driver / BIOS issue.

Nice one dude! Tower looks great.

Did you manage to solve the sleep issue? I have the same board and problem.

ScottJuly 20th, 2010 at 3:14 pm

Still no resolution. I’ve updated the bios with every new release from GIGABYTE and there is no change. I have tried getting the computer to hibernate instead with luck, except that it keeps waking itself up for no reason.

I have found on wake from S3 the fan on the video card doesn’t spin up.
I tried pulling the card out and running on the onboard video without luck.
Something is not powering up on the board properly.
I have booted the system on the basics with only what I need for it to run and that made no difference.
I just realised you are running exactly the same power supply as I am. I wonder if the PSU is not powering up fast enough on resume. This is the only component we have in common appart from the motherboard.

Do you have access to another PSU? It might be worth a shot to try swapping it out.

SeanJuly 23rd, 2010 at 1:45 am

Yeah I am going to try swapping it out with a 650w power supply and I will let you know if it solves the issue. Just a bit backlogged at the moment with my new NAS and the kids computers.

I upgraded my computer and the older gear got handed down to the kids. There was no complaints to be heard there.

Hi Scott,

You will be glad to hear the power supply swap worked! :-) I am now able to sleep and wake without issue.

I replaced the Enermax with a 750w Titan PSU.

If you get your hands on a new power supply I think you will find your sleep issues will be a thing of the past.

Keep us posted.

Well, I finally got around to swapping in a new PSU – went with a CoolerMaster 500W (happened to have a new one here) and the computer will now wake from sleep.

Unfortunately as soon as it wakes it BSOD’s. I’ve got the latest BIOS, latest drivers, and all memtest86 tests are passed by my memory… I’m really at a loss here.

HI Scott,

500W might not be enough. You may need to go 600W+. I haven’t had any problems since the 750W was installed.
